Brief Description

At regional level, support is provided to implement the agenda of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) on the promotion of women's rights, within the framework of the Pact on Security, Stability and Development in the Great Lakes Region. The Pact also includes a Protocol on the Prevention and Suppression of Sexual Violence against Women and Children. UNIFEM provided support to ICGLR in order to revitalize women's movement and mainstream gender as a cross cutting issue.

"Article 11

Protocol on the Prevention and Suppression of Sexual Violence Against Women and Children

The Member States undertake, in accordance with the Protocol on the Prevention and Suppression of Violence Against Women and Children, to combat sexual violence against women and children through preventing, criminalizing and punishing acts of sexual violence, both in times of peace and in times of war, in accordance with national laws and international criminal law."
